Sweet and Tasty Fruity Apricot Chicken

Sweet and Tasty Fruity Apricot Chicken

When my three-year-old daughter Summer was, as I called her then a ‘Little Bit’, I weaned her on a variety of foods and being a non-allergic child she lapped up everything that I put in front of her with gusto!

The experience I had when weaning Charlie was somewhat less enjoyable. He would squirm whenever I put him in his highchair…probably scared to death that I was going to give him yet another flatulence inducing yoghurt, cauliflower and cheese concoction, rice pudding, cheesy pasta dish etc etc! Not only that but he would shout and cry and even clamp his mouth shut so that I couldn’t even get him to try his dinner.

However, although weaning Charlie was more difficult it challenged me to think of interesting dairy free recipes for him that still provided the nutrition that he needed.
One of the recipes that I remembered Little Bit Baby Sums loving was a Fruity Chicken one. When I scanned the ingredients for the recipe it didn’t call for any milk based products so away I went cooking myself into a Fruity Chicken Frenzy! And you know what…? Charlie absolutely loved it!

You can make it with rice or pasta or potatoes and it is delicious. So much so that I now make it for the whole family. Give it a go and see what you think…you can find it in the recipe section.

Lots of Love

  1. Hi
Just wanted to say thanks for your website. My little girl (my second) is allergic to cow's milk, probably soya, egg, nuts and tomatoes. I am struggling a bit and was so good to read your stories. Am trying to decide whether to stop feeding her at the moment - how did you presuade zach and charlie to take neocate? I have some on prescription but she won't take more than an ounce! She's nearly 9 months and been breastfed all the way till now. Also, have you ever had any problems with quinoa? I gave her a plum baby pouch on saturday and that night she had a bad reaction - I know she didn't have any of the thigns she's allergic to or that I am, but then it could have been some contamination as we were at friends and her big brother (who has no allergies) loves to cuddle her when he's eating etc. and hard to keep them apart.
Thanks again - good to know there are other people out there going through somethign similar

  2. Hi Jeanette,

Thank you so much for emailing me your feedback on the site and for telling
    us all about your experience.

We both felt extremely alone during our struggle with both Zach and
Charlie's allergies and sharing our experience and just being there for one
another has really helped us both. We really want to create a community
where we can all help each other and provide useful advice to make dealing
with our children's allergies that little bit more manageable.

In terms of getting Zach and Charlie to take Neocate, I was very lucky as
Charlie took to it immediately even though it is, in my opinion foul!
However, Charlotte did struggle with Zach and found that by adding vanilla
essence to the formula she managed to get Zach to drink more of it. Dr
Oetker do an alcohol free version but it does contain a lot of sugar.

The advice I was given (which worked when I tried to get Charlie to take
Soya formula before he became allergic to that as well) was to 'grade in'
the milk. Which basically meant that I had to mix his normal formula with
small incremental amounts of the soya formula until his tolerance level
increased and eventually he was only drinking the soya formula. Hopefully,
one of these methods will work for you if you haven't already tried them.

Charlotte wanted me to let you know that small foods such as lentils and
sweetcorn etc have a high concentration of proteins and are, therefore, more
likely to cause a reaction so this may be what caused your daughter to react
    to the quinoa.

I know exactly what you mean about the older sibling always wanting cuddle
their little brother/sister and potentially causing contamination. Summer is
always cuddling Charlie and even trying to feed him! However, she does also
say the sweetest things like 'can we make cakes without milk so that Charlie
    can eat them too' :-)!

I hope this information has helped you and please keep in touch over
    email/the blog/Facebook.

    Hope to speak soon

    Thanh and Charlotte x
